Lister’s gecko

This small, tree-dwelling gecko is extinct in the wild, but a breeding program is in place to bring it back.

Lister’s geckos are patterned brown lizards growing up to about 5 cm in length. They eat insects and other small invertebrates and breed all year round.

These geckos were once abundant in Christmas Island’s lush rainforests, but introduced predators have decimated the population to the point where there are none left in the wild today.

However, the species is part of a successful captive breeding program run by Parks Australia. In the future we hope to reintroduce these geckos to their original rainforest habitat.
